Current origins

  1. Guatemala Antigua coffee from NIIK Coffee Collective

    GuatemalaAntigua

The women of the Santo Domingo cooperative began their coffee growing journey by shattering social norms. Unlike most producers, the first oppositions they encountered came from their own hesitant husbands who at the beginning found the role reversal off-putting. In this part of Guatemala, society deters women from entering the workforce; let alone holding positions of power or owning land. The women of Santo Domingo have navigated around these dated ideologies successfully gaining the support of their husbands, community and the coffee world. Today these women are landowners who have diversified their production to include honey, goat keeping and even offer classes in hopes of educating other nearby communities. The path of this bean was paved by hardworking & innovative women unafraid to question the world around them; this passion is reflected in the complexity of the flavor notes found in this coffee.

This women led small producer co-op was incorporated during the Colombian internal conflict and continues to offer support and resources for the community. One of our multi-coop groups of Colombia that was formed is The Cooperative of Sierra Nevada and Santa Marta Coffee Growers, Cooagronevada, was established to bring unity, support, strength, economy of scale and community survival. In the years since being established, the co-op has developed an effective way to support its members by securing, training, educating, listening and aiding in the cultivation of coffee, cocoa and bananas.

We buy the same farms every year

Which is less romantic than it sounds and more useful than it looks. It means we know what the harvest did before it arrives — how the rain fell, how long the beds ran, whether the mill changed hands.

It also means the people who grew it can plan past this season. That is the part that matters, and it is the part most supply chains are built to avoid.
